Wellbody App: A Mindful Approach to Health and Wellness

As a certified health coach and nutrition consultant, Lori Miranda had counseled people seeking help for a wide range of issues—weight loss, sleep problems, stress management and more—yet she found herself having the same conversation with everyone. Discussions always led toward what’s driving their current behaviors, the psychology of change behavior, focusing on small changes, and reframing mistakes into learning experiences. Empowering people to make small, manageable yet effective changes drove Lori and her husband, Brandon, to develop the Wellbody app, which they launched February 20.

Wellbody is a daily practice app to help people develop mindful approaches to health. The Miranda’s mantra is ‘progress over perfection.’ “We take a holistic view across five pillars of wellness—nutrition, exercise and movement, sleep, stress management and connection—and make it accessible for everyone, all in one place,” says Brandon. “We take a mindful approach that’s about awareness, habits and defaults. It’s not about telling people what to do or what not to do, but rather helping them focus on being mindful about their choices and implementing small things that compound over time.”

The Wellbody app is functionally simple and designed like many meditation apps, with audio sessions between seven to 15 minutes in length. Each audio session is intended for daily listening and introduces a topic, with suggestions on how to put that topic into practice. There are also tips and articles on subjects including how to avoid headaches when staring at a computer screen all day, or why we should wait an extra 90 minutes in the morning before having coffee. Lori writes all of the Wellbody app’s content.

In addition, each session also includes a Quote of the Day, which is aligned with the daily experiment. “Even if you don’t have 15 minutes to listen to a session, it’s one manageable and attainable thing you can try to do today and see if it works for you, such as replacing one processed food with a whole food, like grabbing an orange instead of a glass of orange juice,” Brandon explains.

Lori adds that the Wellbody app encourages people to be open to experimentation and reflection. “I think everybody gets information in prescriptive ways, so experimenting and finding things that work specifically for them is new to people,” she says. “Also, working one-on-one with a health coach is unacceptable for most people. It takes time, usually during the workweek, and it could be expensive. We noticed there was a huge portion of the population that couldn’t access our services. We didn’t want to create more barriers to this information; we wanted to create less.”

Those five pillars of health emphasized through Wellbody all connect and paint an overall picture of wellness. Diet affects sleep, and sleep, or lack thereof, impacts how we process food. Stress management is intertwined with how well we connect with others, so Lori and Brandon wanted to focus on bringing all of those together. “Almost half of our daily lives are made up of repeated behaviors that we don’t even think about,” Lori says. “We’re not paying attention and are on autopilot. If we aren’t aware of what we’re doing, it’s difficult to make meaningful progress. When we can get people to slow down and focus on what is going on, they will much more likely to see it and make intentional decisions and goals.”

Wellbody also does push notifications with an inspiring quote. “We hear from people who find that really encouraging,” Brandon says. “Most push notifications people receive involve something that the rest of the world wants from them, but our push notification is a small gift.”
