Recently I had the pleasure of staffing a booth with my sister, Cindy, at the Body Mind Spirit Expo. Taking full advantage of the opportunity to bond through my new role as the local Natural Awakenings publisher, we had great fun visiting all the vendors together. I especially enjoyed connecting with two of our partners, Karen Richards at Nature’s Treasures and Naturopath Beth Carpenter, both there as vendors. Our takeaways included fantastic products and leads to services all good for body and soul.
September is both National Yoga Month and my birth month. As I contemplate another trip around the sun, I’m aware of contending with some changes happening in my body associated with the belief of age, yet I feel the same “me” inside. Looking in the mirror, we may see an unfamiliar face, but we don’t need to react in upset.
Aging gracefully—accepting things as they are with humor and without judgment—is a lesson that can be applied in any aspect of life. That’s not to say we can’t act to restore nicely functioning vitality. Daily exercise is the number one thing we can do to stay feeling young. Eating more plant-based foods and meditating are equally good moves. Looking to appropriate alternative therapies also may ease our way.
In this issue, we highlight many different yoga methods, what’s currently trending and how our practice can keep us flexible at any age. We also note two Austin studios innovating with classes to bring yoga to groups and individuals that might otherwise miss out on its benefits. From beginners to kids healing from trauma and cancer survivors, those seeking yoga to ease life’s challenges have some great options in the Austin area. .
I’m particularly happy that this month’s editorial explores natural ways to ease and even reverse the effects of aging joints. It’s no surprise that losing weight has a big impact and we learn how other approaches such as cultivating a healthy gut biome and meditation can also be used to naturally address joint pain.
Years happen, but difficult aging is not a foregone conclusion. Just look around and see how some people are handling it beautifully—then find out how they’re doing it!
