A One-Stop Resource for Local Fitness Activities
by Sheila Julson
While growing up in Egypt, Ahmed S. AbouElezz and his younger sister lived active lifestyles and frequently participated together in health and fitness related events. In 2006, AbouElezz left Egypt to travel the world playing professional rugby. Nine years later, he received a disturbing phone call that would eventually motivate him to create the FITT Finder app, an Austin specific guide to fitness and wellness experiences.
“I received a phone call from my dad informing me that my sister was in the hospital, in intensive care,” AbouElezz says. “She had poor health issues due to an inactive and unhealthy lifestyle.” Shocked, AbouElezz called his sister and asked how her health had deteriorated, and why she no longer participated in fitness activities like she had when he still lived at home. She told him she felt lost, and didn’t know what to do or where to go.
“I asked her why she didn’t just search online, because there are a tons of resources,” AbouElezz recalls,” and she said, ‘Ahmed, did you ever try to search Google for something? There’s so much, and it’s overwhelming. I tried and felt intimidated.’”
AbouElezz dismissed her excuses as procrastination, but shortly after, he became injured while playing rugby. As he recovered, he gained weight, so he searched online for fitness resources. He quickly became confused and frustrated by how cumbersome it was to search for specific, localized fitness activities. “It hit me that what my sister was saying was absolutely accurate,” he says. “There was no sense of personalization, and when I searched fitness apps, it was even worse.” He found that users were directed through a maze of separate sources for different fitness needs, and there was no single platform that provided a convenient, one-stop resource for consumers.
Seeing a need to simplify and streamline information about fitness activities into a single, user-friendly source, AbouElezz created the free FITT Finder app, which is Austin-specific and serves as a local guide to all health and fitness activities. FITT (an acronym for an effective exercise program standing for Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type) Finder serves as an all-encompassing destination where users can locate free trials, various fitness classes; active Meetup groups, events; and more.
“This is practically the only app that shows everything around you at any time, for all fitness levels and for any budget,” AbouElezz explains. “FITT Finder shows free events, and we’ve also partnered with nonprofits organizations and government entities, to promote healthy and active lifestyles and bring awareness to people—entirely for free.”
Since launching FITT Finder six months ago, AbouElezz says FITT Finder has been well received by consumers and businesses, with 1,200 users within the first three months. Eventually, FITT Finder apps will be available in major cities throughout the United States.
