Taking Earth Day in Texas to a New Level

Apr 06, 2016 10:43PM

Austin Earth Day Festival returns for a fifth year to The Browning Hangar at Mueller, from noon to 7 p.m., April 23. The free event will feature a monster musical lineup to inform and inspire environmental awareness and action throughout the community. This year’s gala features a wide variety of entertainment, exhibits, speakers, kids’ activities, outdoor activities, food trailers and more, in an Austinstyle, zero-waste event.

Grammy award winners Asleep at the Wheel, voted “Best Country and Western Band” by Rolling Stone magazine, will headline the musical lineup. Also performing will be Ruby Jane & the Reckless, the fiddle prodigy turned singer, songwriter, and national touring artist; Sweet Spirit, the exploding Austin indie rock phenomenon; and Riders Against the Storm, Austin’s hip hop sensation and winner of back-to-back “Band of the Year” awards by The Austin Chronicle.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler will be the master of ceremonies in an aerial photo project, sponsored by Austin Resource Recovery. City residents, along with their city council members, will compete by district for the strongest showing.

Austin Earth Day 2016 is produced by Earth Day Texas Austin, a nonprofit extension of Earth Day Texas, which produces the largest Earth Day celebration in the world in Dallas.

This year’s festival is sponsored by HEB; Austin Resource Recovery; Balcones Resources; City of Austin Code Compliance; Austin Energy’s GreenChoice program; City of Austin Office of Sustainability; Save Barton Creek Association; Stan’s Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.; and Mueller, along with media sponsors The Austin Chronicle, radio stations KUT and KOOP, and Austin-American Statesman.
