Volunteers Needed for Camp Indigo
Jul 17, 2015 01:36PM
The Amala Foundation, an Austin-based organization offering supportive and inspiring experiences for youth, is seeking volunteers for the 15th annual Camp Indigo to be held July 5 through 24 at Austin Discovery School and Whole Life Learning Center. Due to increased demand, the 2015 camp will have one additional session and will be expanded to a four-week period. Volunteers will assist with activities that blend social emotional learning and a crossculture connection aimed at providing the next generation of leaders with a model of inclusion, compassion, commitment and service.
Camp Indigo unites local teachers, businesses, farmers, musicians, artists, community leaders and volunteers from all walks of life to create a safe, nurturing, exploratory environment for all participants, including immigrant and refugee children now living in Austin. Typical activities include rhythm games, Life Kido, yoga, mural painting, gardening, interactive drumming, improv, self-portraits, journal-making, cooperative games and songwriting. Activities are designed to increase confidence, teach communication skills and promote respect for self and others.
The goal of the Amala Foundation is to provide the experience of Camp Indigo to all children who wish to attend, regardless of ability to pay; 80 percent of participants receive scholarships. Through generous supporters, the foundation was able to offer over $13,000 in Camp Indigo scholarships to children in 2014.
Location: 8509 FM 969, Ste. 200, Austin; 10801 Old San Antonio Rd., Austin. For more information on volunteering or registration, visit AmalaFoundation.org.
