Be a Hero for a Hero to Welcome Soldiers Home

Nov 16, 2014 08:51PM

The Welcoming Your Soldier Home Project is sponsoring Save a Hero, an event created to provide a safe and supportive environment for returning combat veterans to share their experiences of wartime trauma with the community and bring to light the heartbreaking truths of suicide that exists among veterans and active duty service members. The discussion will take place from 6 to 9:30 p.m., November 19 at One World Theater, in Austin.

This panel will be moderated by former KEYE broadcast journalist Judy Maggio, with a live musical performance by Slaid Cleaves to follow. A showing of the documentary film Frozen in War is included to provide the audience a chance to hear from the film’s star cast of veteran suicide survivors and post-traumatic Stress (PTS) experts first-hand.

Save a Hero organizers emphasize how conversation can help break the barriers of post-traumatic stress and save lives, stating on its website that “Silence surrounds wartime trauma and its psychological and spiritual effects on soldiers, creating a barrier that separates our veterans from society. Silence also stigmatizes the PTS many veterans suffer from and perpetuates stereotypes, furthering the rift between service member and society. Save A Hero tears down those barriers and provides the community a way to truly welcome veterans home and give them a comfortable place free of judgment for them to share their stories and end the silence.”

Cost: $25. Location: 7701 Bee Caves Rd., Austin. For more information, call 512-609-0751, email [email protected] or visit
