Gems, Fossils and More!

Sep 02, 2014 01:11PM

The Austin Gem and Mineral Society will be hosting Gem Capers 2014 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., October 3 and 4, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., October 5, at the Palmer Events Center, in Austin. This year’s theme is dinosaurs, and the gem and mineral show will include jewelry, beads, gemstones, mineral specimens, crystals, fossils, spheres and lapidary equipment offered by more than 30 vendors.

There will be numerous exhibits, including the mineral collections of society members, the popular Touch Table of rocks and fossils, and a fluorescent mineral display (rocks that glow under special lighting). There will be a silent auction and demonstrations of stone faceting, wire wrapping, cabbing, fossil cleaning, polymer clay, as well as games and activities for kids, including the Wheel of Fortune, Gem Mine and jewelry making. Also part of the fun will be hourly door prize drawings and a grand prize giveaway on October 5—a nine-by-10-inch plate of crystals.

The Austin Gem and Mineral Society, a nonprofit organization, will use proceeds of the show to support society activities, as well as provide scholarships for students in the earth sciences.

Cost: children 12 and under, free; 13 to 18, $1; adults, $5; seniors (60+), $4. Location: 900 Barton Springs Rd., Austin. For more information, visit and
